Treatment

EMDR therapy consists of eight stages where you work with the past, present, and future. Incidents/traumas/experiences/triggers from the past are involved that can explain why a person feels discomfort or a difficult experience in everyday life. The treatment works to help those memories be less harmful or triggering.

What happens during a session?

It starts with going over what the individual wants to work with. The therapist asks questions about the trauma history and examines what ways the person knows to have a positive effect on their well-being. If necessary, ways to improve well-being are taught before trauma work begins. The EMDR therapy can be tried when/if difficult emotions come up in processing, but most people feel a difference in how they feel after one session.

Duration of Treatment

If one specific trauma or memory needs to be worked on, e.g. a single accident, the treatment takes less time. In the case of recurring incidents or childhood traumas, longer treatment time may be required. Clinical guidelines believe that 8 - 12 treatment hours are needed for trauma treatment, but more hours if there are multiple traumas. In the case of more complex traumas, and there is repeated mental, physical, or sexual violence, the treatment takes longer. More ways to work with such traumas are offered (for example, weekly therapy or intensive therapy).

The client usually feels a lot of relief following the treatment and the well-being in the body increases. Some say they about see themselves in a new light and their negative attitude, towards themselves, others, or life in general, changes. You may also gain a more helpful and constructive attitude overall. Learn more about EMDR at EMDR.is

EMDR Setrið also offers remote sessions. In remote sessions, the same therapeutic approach is offered as in interviews in the office.

Remote interviews are suitable for when COVID is on the rise or for people with health concerns. They are also suitable for persons who live outside the country or cannot attend an interview due to some other circumstances. TELEMED is used, which is designed with regard to the requirements of the National Health Service and personal protection. Each interview takes place in a closed interview room to which only the client and the healthcare provider have access. You may book an appointment for a remote interview with the secretary like other appointments.
