The EMDR Center is led by Sigríður Björnsdóttir, M.Sc. psychologist and certified EMDR specialist. She specializes in the resolution of trauma, complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as general psychological services.

Sigríður Björnsdóttir, M.Sc. Psychologist

About Me

Sigríður has worked in private psychology clinics since graduating with an M.Sc in psychology from HR in 2018. She is regularly tutored by both Icelandic and foreign tutors and systematically participates in training and further education in the EMDR form of therapy and important specializations related to it.

Sigríður founded the non-profit organization Blátt Áfram in 2004, which many people know. She worked in the company for more than 15 years, during which time she provided education and counseling on the prevention of sexual violence against children. She has given numerous presentations to parents, managers, and staff working with children and young people in the prevention of sexual violence. Sigríður also guided in recognizing the symptoms and consequences of violence as well as how to provide support in such situations. She has taught primary school children from the 5th grade up to high school. In her work, Sigríður has participated in conferences and worked with other non-governmental organizations around the world on the importance of preventing sexual violence against children. 

Sigríður wrote and published the parenting guide "Einkastaðir sluður" in 2014 with Kristína Berta Guðnadóttir, a social worker and family therapist. In addition, Sigríður has promoted the prevention and consequences of violence in the media, delivered presentations, and led working groups in collaboration with the government's awareness program in the fall of 2012. Sigríður also provides advice to institutions, sports clubs and other non-governmental organizations regarding the implementation of codes of practice and ethics related to the protection of children against violence. Sigríður is a part-time lecturer at the University of Akureyri and EHÍ on psychological trauma and violence. She has also given lectures abroad and has worked with Wocad, which deals with the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse for women. She also deals with cooperation on the prevention of violence with other nations and has trained people in prevention from Sweden, Norway, Greenland, Latvia, and Hungary. The associations Blátt Áfram and Barnaheill merged in 2019, but she retired from the association in 2020. Sigríður Björnsdóttir was the first to translate s.n. ACE Screening List (http://hdl.handle.net/1946/24951). Her final project for a BA degree in psychology deals with the relationship between difficult experiences in childhood and the quality of life of people later in life.
